Eric Schmaltz

from THE NOTHINGS OF THE ALPHABET:
SURFACE PATTERNS

This poem is taken from a series entitled "The Nothings of the Alphabet," which presents works composed using only the shapes that make up the closed parts of the letters A, B, D, O, P, Q and R.  The shape made by the enclosure of a letter is referred to as a "counter" in typography.  These pieces thus give presence to an aspect of the alphabet that is otherwise thought of as void.
